

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 3, 2004 – Springfield College junior middle blocker MaryKathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) was named tournament MVP after leading the Pride to four-straight victories and the team title at the SC Women’s Volleyball Invitational today.
Senior opposite Ashley Reves (Orchard Park, N.Y.) also garnered All-Tournament Team honors for her stellar play throughout the weekend.
In match one, the Pride (4-0) were led by O’Neil as she totaled 20 kills and a .643 hitting percentage as SC defeated Roger Williams, 3-0 (30-15, 30-19, 30-23). Senior setter Alesia Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) dished out 36 assists in the win and freshman Jessica Baldwin (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded a team-high four service aces. Junior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) had eight digs for the Pride.
In the second match of the day, Reves totaled 11 kills and 13 digs as the Pride made quick work of Brandeis University, 3-0 (30-23, 30-17, 30-23). Vaccari recorded 31 more assists in the match, and Hettrick registered 13 more digs for SC.
Next weekend the Pride will travel to the Johnson & Wales Invitational, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 9-10.
Joel Dearing will enter his 20th season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2008. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 638-293 (.685) overall mark in 27 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
