Harlem Globetrotters to Host Youth Basketball Camp at Springfield College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- August 16, 2007 -- Springfield College will play host to the Campbell Soup Company-sponsored Harlem Globetrotters Summer Youth Basketball Camp from August 20-23, 2007. Throughout the summer the original Harlem Globetrotters have traveled across the country providing an educational and memorable week of basketball and instruction. In a unique arrangement, the Globetrotters are partnering with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for the event, with the last day of camp being held at the state-of-the-art Hall of Fame facility in Springfield.

The week-long camp offers traditional on-court drills and teaches basketball fundamentals, and also includes sessions on academics, character, leadership and good citizenship. The camps, available in both morning and afternoon sessions, are open to children 6-16 years of age.

“We are delighted to have the Globetrotters on our campus. They are positive role models to the local youth,” said Kelly Hart, Associate Director of Athletics at Springfield College. “The Globetrotters have served as outstanding Ambassadors of Goodwill throughout the world and as we at Springfield continue to build upon our Humanics philosophy, this is a natural partnership.”

Instructional work stations will take place on the basketball court emphasizing the important ideals of teamwork, leadership and physical fitness. Children will also enjoy and learn from the classroom setting that involves role playing and discussions, the importance of a good education, making the right choices, improving self-esteem, avoiding peer pressure, and appreciating a healthy lifestyle.

"Our basketball camps are designed to not only enhance basketball skills, but also to improve self-esteem, academic importance, and leadership skills," said Globetrotters' Chief Operations Officer, Jeff Munn. "Each camper will have the opportunity to work with Harlem Globetrotter players and coaches each day of the camp. It is our goal to have every camp participant walk away with an unforgettable lifetime experience."

Harlem Globetrotters players and coaches will be at Springfield College in Springfield to conduct the camp the first four days of camp, with the final day being hosted at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

To register, go online to www.harlemglobetrotters.com, click the Summer Camp link under Kids Court or call 1-800-641-HOOP. The week-long camp costs $175. The camps are limited in size to maximize the camper-to-instructor ratio, so early registration is encouraged.

In addition to the instruction and an incredible experience, all campers will take home with them: an official Harlem Globetrotters Summer Youth Basketball Camp T-shirt, a mini-Globetrotter basketball, a Globetrotters team photo, and a camp picture.
