SPRINGFIELD, Mass., September 13, 2006 – Springfield College freshman Caitlin Sawczuk (Plainville, Conn.) netted her first career goal in the 30th minute in tonight’s match between the Pride and the Williams College Ephs. However, the Pride’s solo goal was not enough to overcome the Ephs’ offense, as SC recorded its first loss of the season.
The Ephs struck first when sophomore forward Gabrielle Woodson (Plano, Texas) scored just thirteen and a half minutes into the match. Junior Kaolin McEvoy (Longmeadow, Mass.) would increase Williams’ lead to two goals only 12 minutes later, at the 28:49 mark.
Springfield’s goal from Sawzuk, assisted by junior Lindsay Bugbee (Granby, Conn.), came less than a minute after the Ephs' second goal, keeping the Pride within striking distance. Neither team scored again before halftime.
The starting goalkeeper for the Pride, junior Amanda Petri (Granby, Conn.) left the game after the first half, carding four saves. Backup keeper, sophomore Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.), was unable to make a save on Williams College junior Joan Danver’s (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) breakaway shot in the 75th minute. Williams’ third goal essentially put the game out of reach for the Pride.
The Ephs improved their record to 2-0-1, while the Pride dropped to 3-1 overall.
Williams College goalkeeper, senior Sarah Ginsburg (Dallas, Texas), recorded one save and allowed one goal.
The Springfield College women’s soccer team returns to the field on Saturday, September 16th. The Pride travels to Troy, N.Y., to face RPI at 12:30 p.m.
