No. 12 Field Hockey Handles WPI, 4-0
Box ScoreWorcester, MA - October 9, 2007 --- Senior midfielder Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) tallied two goals to help lift nationally-ranked Springfield to a 4-0 victory over host WPI in NEWMAC conference women’s field hockey action on Tuesday evening. The Pride, ranked #12 in the latest STX/NFHCA poll, improve to 12-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while the Engineers dropped to 6-8 on the season and 1-4 in NEWMAC action.
Springfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 27:55 when Veazie scored following a penalty corner. Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) and Morgan Rein (Mystic, Conn.) each registered an assist on the play. The Pride scored again with just 21 seconds remaining in the half when Kelleher scored an unassisted tally. The goal was her NEWMAC-leading 18th of the season.
The Pride continued to build on its lead in the second stanza, scoring on a Emily Murray (Boonton, N.J.) penalty stroke at 52:49 and Veazie’s second marker of the game at 57:58. For the season, Veazie now has 12 goals.
WPI goalkeeper Mary Kate Toomey notched 11 stops on the evening while Maggie Elbag was credited with an eye-popping four defensive saves. Springfield goalies Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Julia Kincade (Durham, N.H.) combined to earn the shutout.
Springfield travels to Norton , Mass. for a 1 pm game against Wheaton on Saturday.

Head Coach Melissa Rogers
After only five years as head coach of the Pride, Melissa Rogers, has continued the SC tradition of winning on the field hockey turf, posting an impressive 94-24 record, good for a winning percentage of .796 at the helm of her alma mater.
