Women's Volleyball Splits in Final Day of Bates Invitational

LEWISTON, Maine. - September 29, 2007 The Springfield College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches in the final day of the Bates Invitational on Saturday evening.
With the split, the Pride move to 13-6 on the season. The Pride defeated Rivier in three games by the scores of 30-26, 30-16, 30-13, before falling in five games to Eastern Connecticut, 18-30, 24-30, 31-29, 30-28, 15-11.
In the Pride's opening three-game sweep of Rivier, Aylene Ilkson (Baldwin, N.Y.) led the way with nine kills and 16 digs. Springfield recorded 12 team blocks in the match and was paced by Sarah Lang-Rodean's (Mansfield Center, Conn.) three solo and three block assists.
In the championship match of the Invitational, despite winning the first two games, the Pride dropped a five-game match to Eastern Connecticut. Ilkson was outstanding in the match as she hammered out 18 kills to go along with a season-best 30 digs. Kelsea Hellyar (Fairhaven, Mass.) dished out 55 assists to go along with 24 digs in the contest. Heidi Yohe (Deer Park, Wash.) added 13 kills and 13 digs while Lang-Rodean chipped in with 14 kills and five blocks. Bethany Stosz (Amherst, Mass.) also tallied eight kills and nine blocks in the contest.
For their efforts in the tournament, Ilkson and Lindsay Marone (Hamden, Conn.) were selected to the all-tournament team.
The Pride taken on NEWMAC-rival Coast Guard on Tuesday evening. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.

Head Coach Joel Dearing
Joel Dearing will enter his 21st season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2009. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 670-298 (.692) overall mark in 28 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
