Derek Yvon Named ECAC Div. III New England and NEWMAC Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 14, 2006 - Springfield College senior guard Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) has been named the men’s basketball ECAC Division III New England and New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week, in reports released both on Monday and Tuesday, February 13-14.

It marks the third time this season that Yvon has garnered NEWMAC Player of the Week honors, and second time he has been honored as the ECAC Division III New England Player of the Week. The senior was last honored by the ECAC on December 19, as he collected NEWMAC weekly honors on January 2 and February 6.

Yvon, a graduate of Cathedral High School, had quite an eventful week as the Pride won a pair of games and moved into contention for a first-round home game in the NEWMAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, February 21. In SC’s 83-67 win last Tuesday evening (Feb. 7) over Clark, Yvon eclipsed the 2,000-point plateau and then became the school’s all-time scoring leader, in a span of just one minute and 17 seconds. Yvon, who surpassed Hassan Robinson’s (’95) school record of 2,003 career points, became the first 2,000-point scorer in NEWMAC history and just the 17th overall in New England Division III history.

Overall on the week, the senior co-captain averaged 28.5 points per game (ppg) in two Pride wins while canning 20-of-22 free throws (90.9%). In the win at home against Clark, Yvon registered 28 points (game-high), and in a hard-fought 71-64 win at Babson this past Saturday (Feb. 11), Yvon led all scorers with 29 points. On the season, Derek is averaging a conference-high 23.0 ppg as SC has won its past five contests with just two left on the regular-season.

The Pride has moved into a fourth-place tie in the NEWMAC standings as a result of its latest streak, as SC has raised its record to 10-13 overall and 5-5 in league play. SC will next travel to Worcester, Mass., to take on WPI in a crucial conference contest tonight, February 14, in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
