

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 6, 2006) – Fresh off its third straight NEWMAC title, the Springfield College field hockey team has learned that it will play New England College in a first-round NCAA Division III post-season tournament game this Wednesday at 4 pm at SC’s Benedum Field.
The Pride now owns a 17-5 overall record in 2006 following its 5-4 victory over Wellesley in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference final yesterday at Wellesley. The victory was SC’s third straight in NEWMAC Championship play, as SC also claimed NEWMAC titles in 2004 and 2005.
New England College of Henniker, N.H. owns the third-best record in the 24-team field of this NCAA Tourney. With a 19-2 overall mark, New England College’s record trails only those of Cortland State (18-0) and Bowdoin College (15-1).
The winner of the Springfield/New England College game will next play at Lebanon Valley College in a regional at Annville, Pennsylvania (not too far from Harrisburg). The winner would play the host school, Lebanon Valley (18-2), at 10 am on Saturday (Nov. 11). In the second game of the day at that regional, Salisbury University of Salisbury, Md. (17-3) would take on the winner of Wednesday’s game between Christopher Newport University of Newport News, Va. (12-3) and Alvernia College of Reading, Penn. (18-4). The regional final will be played at Lebanon Valley Sunday (Nov. 12) at 1 pm.
The NCAA Division III Field Hockey Final Four will be played on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 17-18 at William Smith College in Geneva,. N.Y.
After only four years as head coach of the Pride, Melissa Rogers, has continued the SC tradition of winning on the field hockey turf, posting an impressive 78-17 record, good for a winning percentage of .821 at the helm of her alma mater. Read more.
