SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 30, 2007 – Springfield College freshman pitcher Courtney Kapinos (South Hadley, Mass.) had her first complete-game victory as the Pride held on for a 5-4 victory over host Western New England College (WNEC) in the second game of a non-league doubleheader Monday. SC also took the opener by the score of 9-3.
Kapinos (3-1), who was making only her second collegiate start, retired the final out after the Golden Bears scored three times in the seventh and had the tying and winning runs on second and third.
Freshman catcher Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, N.J.) slugged a three-run homer
in the sixth, while sophomore designated player Danielle Spiro (South
Windsor, Conn.) had two hits and two runs batted in (RBI), including what proved to be the
game-winning RBI single in the top of the seventh. Sophomore center
fielder Angela Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) had three singles and scored a run.
The Golden Bears had 10 hits, including two singles by junior third base
player Meredith Pacelli, who also had a RBI. Junior
designated player Steph Ganser had a two-run single in
the seventh.
In the opener, freshman right fielder Bryn Worrilow (North Babylon, N.Y.)
scored two runs and reached base all four times for the Pride with a
three-run double in the first, two singles, and a walk. Spiro also had
two hits, including a two-run single in the fourth.
Western New England College hit three home runs to account for its runs,
including a pair by Pacelli in her first two at-bats. Sophomore
shortstop Brittany DeGennaro followed Pacelli’s second
blast for back-to-back round trippers in the fourth.
SC, which was playing perhaps its final games of the season,
improves its record to 25-14, while Western New England College falls to
27-15. The Golden Bears visit Williams in a twin bill Tuesday (May 1).
Both teams are now awaiting word on the post-season, which would begin sometime during the week of May 7.
