MaryKathryn O'Neil Garners NEWMAC Player of the Week Honors
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., September 5, 2006 - Springfield College senior middle blocker MaryKathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week for the first official week of the 2006 fall season. It marks the second consecutive season that O’Neil has been named the conference’s Player of the Week to open the season.
O’Neil, a native of Liverpool, N.Y., and graduate of West Genesee High School, was named the Springfield College Invitational Tournament MVP this past weekend, as it marked the second straight year that the senior tri-captain has taken home the honor. The 5-11 middle blocker led the Pride to victories over Suffolk University, Rhode Island College, the University of New England, and Roger Williams University, in which SC won every match by a deciding score of 3-0.
O’Neil racked up quite a hitting percentage throughout the 12 games this past weekend, totaling 48 kills on 84 swings with just nine errors, good for an impressive .464 hitting percentage. O’Neil also contributed to the cause with a total of 14 blocks (four solo) and 10 digs. In all, MaryKathryn O’Neil registered tournament averages of 4.0 kills per game, 1.17 blocks per game, and 0.83 digs per game on her way to being named Tournament MVP.
The Pride (4-0) will look to keep it going this weekend as it travels to Providence, R.I., for the Johnson and Wales Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 8th and 9th. On Saturday, SC will meet Suffolk University for the second time already this season at 4:00 p.m. before facing Bridgewater State College in an 8:00 p.m. start.

Head Coach Joel Dearing
Joel Dearing will enter his 20th season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2008. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 638-293 (.685) overall mark in 27 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
