Hanewich Scores Twice to Lead Women's Soccer Over RIC, 3-0
Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 26, 2007) – Nicole Hanewich led the #22-ranked Springfield College women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory tonight over Rhode Island College at Springfield’s Brock-Affleck Field at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.

With the win, Springfield is now 8-1, while RIC drops to 3-4-1.

All three of the Pride’s goals were scored in the first half.

The game’s first goal was scored by junior midfielder Lauren Peltier (Agawam, Mass.) on a header off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Jillian Pereira (East Providence, R.I.). That came just 12:57 into the contest. Peltier was no more than a few feet from the goal, perched at the far post.

Then Hanewich took over. The junior forward from Smithfield, R.I. took a nice feed from sophomore forward Maria Evans (Gloucester, Mass.) to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team at the 24:32 mark. Then with just 2:02 remaining in the first half, Hanewich took advantage of an error by the goalkeeper, who misfired on a goal kick. Hanewich gathered in that kick not too far from the net and then walked in, scoring on a bender from about 20 yards out.

Springfield had outshot the Anchorwomen, 14-1, in that half, and ultimately, 21-6, for the game. For RIC, junior goalkeeper Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, Conn.) was credited with eight saves in 90 minutes of action. For Springfield, junior goalkeeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) was credited with two saves in the same amount of time.

Up next, Springfield will host Coast Guard Saturday (Sept. 29) at 3:30 pm. RIC will host Western Connecticut State the same afternoon at 1:00 pm.
