Boxscore
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland senior attack Adam Hughes recorded two goals and two assists and junior midfielder Mike Abbott scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with
just under 11 minutes remaining, as Cortland, ranked fourth nationally in
Division III, defeated 18th-ranked Springfield, 10-8.
The Red Dragons improved to 3-0 on the season, with all three wins coming
versus ranked teams. Springfield falls to 0-4, with all four setbacks to
ranked teams by two goals or less. The Pride previously lost by two goals
to both second-ranked Nazareth and third-ranked Middlebury in addition to a
one-goal loss to 15th-ranked Hartwick.
Senior midfielder
Adam Cost (Camillus, N.Y.) led Springfield with
three goals and one assist. Sophomore goalie
Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley,
Mass.) made 15 saves, 10 in the second half.
Junior attack Tony Ventiquattro finished with a goal
and two assists and both sophomore midfielder Ryan Simensky
and junior midfielder Matt O'Connell added a goal
and an assist for the Red Dragons. Junior goalie Ben Gaebel recorded 10 saves.
Cortland led 7-5 after three quarters, but Springfield tied the game with a
pair of goals just 12 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter. Cost
scored an extra-man goal off a
Craig Gibson (South Salem, N.Y.) assist
with 13:49 left, and on the ensuing faceoff senior
Mark Maitland (Salem,
Mass.) scooped up a ground ball, raced into the offensive box and ripped a
shot past Gaebel to tie the game.
Abbott, however, broke the tie off an O'Connell feed with 10:48 remaining.
The Cortland lead stayed at one for almost nine minutes. Shortly after
Abbott's goal, Springfield killed off a two-minute Red Dragon extra-man
opportunity that arised when a Pride player was whistled for two slashing
penalties on the same possession.
The game stayed at 8-7 until there was less than two minutes remaining.
With Springfield forced to double-team, Abbott was able to beat his
defender and score into an empty net with 1:53 left. Sophomore midfielder
Bill Gleason, who won 13-of-19 faceoffs in the
contest, added a goal with 1:37 remaining. Springfield's final goal came
from Cost with 23 seconds left after Cortland was whistled for three
penalties, two with 1:09 left and the other with 47 seconds remaining.
Cortland took a 3-1 lead after one period. Hughes scored just 40 seconds
into the game, although the Pride tied the game a few minutes later on a
Gibson goal. Hughes assisted on the next two Red Dragon goals – one by
Ventiquattro with 7:39 on the clock and the other by junior attack Kyle
Lambert with 2:18 remaining.
O'Connell's goal 15 seconds into the second quarter extended the lead to
4-1 and, following a
Kevin Warnock (Somers, Conn.) goal for Springfield, the
Red Dragons pushed the lead to 6-2 on goals by Simensky and sophomore Mike
Felice at the 4:40 and 3:40 marks, respectively.
Springfield answered with two goals to close within 6-4 at halftime. Senior
Lars
Keil (Andover, Mass.) tallied with 2:05 left and Cost netted a goal with 31
seconds remaining. The teams traded goals in the third quarter –
