Men's Volleyball Handles New Haven, 3-0
Box ScoreSPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Feb. 19, 2008- For the second time in five days, the Springfield College men’s volleyball team cruised past New Haven in three games on Tuesday evening -- this time at Springfield's Blake Arena
Springfield won by the scores of 30-26, 30-25, 30-17.
The Pride, led by junior All-American Ryan Fredrickson’s (Surf City, N.J.) game-high 15 kills, improved to 11-2 overall, 4-0 in EIVA Hay Division action. New Haven drops to 6-5, 0-2 in conference play.
Trailing 12-11 midway through the opening game, the Pride rattled off a 5-0 run sparked by a an Eric Shoemaker (Mount Wolf, Pa.) kill and service ace to force a Charger timeout. New Haven battled back, cutting the lead to two, 28-26, after a Pride attack error. Springfield went on to capture the first game after a Fredrickson kill and double block from Bill Yates (Albany, N.Y.) and Shoemaker gave SC the 30-26 victory. New Haven managed just five kills in the opening stanza, while Fredrickson himself hammered out eight.
With the game knotted at seven all in the second game, a Cal Palumbo (Rochester, N.Y.) kill opened up the Pride’s 11-1 run as the home team grabbed a commanding 17-8 lead. Eric Palumbo (Chili, N.Y.) had a pair of kills in the run for Springfield, who would lead by as many as 11 in the stanza, 21-10 after a block from Fredrickson and Andy Sipe (New Oxford, Pa.). New Haven mounted a comeback down the stretch, but an Eric Palumbo kill gave the home squad a 30-25 victory.
After a Pride attack error made the score 15-12 in favor of the Springfield, the fourth-ranked team in Division III responded with a 11-4 run to take a 26-16 lead. In the run, Fredrickson pounded out three kills for SC. Cal Palumbo closed the door on the match with a kill out of the middle, giving Springfield a 30-17 win.
Fredrickson finished with 15 kills, hitting .542 to go along with three blocks, while Eric Palumbo added 11 kills. Cal Palumbo continued his outstanding play in his freshman campaign as he hammered out nine kills, hitting a perfect 1.000 for the match to go along with five blocks. Javier Rosario (San Juan, Puerto Rico) registered a game-high eight digs for the Pride. Shoemaker tossed out 28 assists in two games, while Chris Shekell (Rochester, N.Y.) added 12 assists in one game of work. For the match, Springfield hit .333.
For the Chargers, Chris Lennon hit a team-best eight kills to go along with 10 assists and four blocks. New Haven hit just .054 for the match
Springfield returns to action when it serves as host for the 21st annual Volleyball Hall of Fame/Morgan Classic this weekend. The Pride will square off against the University of Southern California at 8:00 pm Friday in Blake Arena.
