WORCESTER, Mass., April 16, 2004 -- Springfield College sophomore Justin Freitas (East Providence, R.I.) and senior Chris Sweeney (Wakefield, R.I.) both picked up singles victories and teamed for an 8-6 win at #2 doubles as the Pride topped Clark, 5-2, in a New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis match on Thursday.
The victory evened SC's conference record to 2-2 overall. The Pride close out the regular-season slate with matches against Coast Guard (April 17) and Babson (April 21) on Appleton Courts before competing in the conference championships on April 24. Clark falls to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.
Freitas, who won a three-set marathon to improve his #4 singles record to 3-1, and Sweeney, who won in straight sets at #5, were two of four singles victors. Senior Yuta Yoshi (Yokosuka, Japan) evened his singles mark at 4-4 by domainting at #1, winning 6-4, 6-1, and junior Tim Losee (Berlin, N.H.) was equally impressive at with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #6.
In doubles, senior Brad Bosivert (Ponaganset, R.I.) and junior Rich Asletine (Tyngsboro, Mass.) won 8-5 at #3.
