Nikki Hay Named USTFCCCA East Region Field Athlete of the Year
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- May 21, 2008 -- Nikki Hay of Springfield College has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association East Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year. She is one of 32 Division III coaches and athletes from around the nation receiving regional honors.

A native of Norwalk, Conn., the sophomore was certainly a top candidate for this award this season, considering her accomplishments to date. And there may still be more to come. Hay will be competing this weekend in her specialty, the triple jump, at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Oshkosh, Wis. She is seeded 10th with her best mark of 38-4 3/4. Earlier this year, at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in Ada, Ohio, Hay finished 12th in the triple jump.

At the recent ECAC Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held on her own home field here at Springfield College, Hay won both the long jump and the triple jump. In that meet, she was named the Co-Most Outstanding Female Performer of the Meet. She also won the long jump and triple jump at the NEWMAC Championships at Smith College, and at the New England Division III Championships at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. She also won the triple jump at the New England Open Championships at the University of New Hampshire. In eight spring competitions, she qualified for the nationals in the triple jump seven times.

Hay has been named All-Conference and All-New England many times this season, not only in the long jump and triple jump, but also in the 100, 200, and in relays. Last May, Hay finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 38-1 1/4 in the Division III nationals at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. For her efforts, she achieved All-America status.
