Softball Splits with Williams College in Regular-Season Home Finales, 11-1 and 12-3

SC 11, Williams 1 (5 innings)

Williams 12, SC 3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 23, 2007 – Springfield College freshman shortstop Jaimie Moran (Manchester, Conn.) went 2-for-2 in game one with four runs batted in (RBI) and two runs scored, and sophomore starter Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) hurled a complete game for her ninth victory of the season as the Pride cruised past Williams College, 11-1, in game one of two in a non-conference doubleheader at Potter Field.

Game two was a different story, however, as senior catcher Katelyn Knox went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and three RBIs, and sophomore starter Morgan Simpson pitched a complete game for her seventh victory of the year as the Ephs got their redemption, 12-3.

After the split, SC is 22-12 overall on the season and will next host the 2007 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament starting on Wednesday afternoon, April 25th, at Potter Field. The Ephs of Williams College move to 15-13 overall on their campaign.

Game one saw the Pride jump out on Williams after the Ephs led 1-0 heading into the bottom half of the second inning. At that moment, SC exploded to plate nine runners in the second frame to take control. The Pride then scored two more in the bottom half of the fourth inning to close out the game in five, 11-1. Sophomore designated player Aimee Cassella (Southington, Conn.) went 3-for-3 in the lid lifter with three runs scored and two RBIs. Sophomore infielder Loni Rodriguez (Westfield, Mass.) also recorded a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run.

The teams traded positions in game two, with Williams scoring in every inning besides the first and the fifth, highlighted by a five-run top half of the third. Sophomore shortstop Joey Lye was the catalyst for the Ephs at the leadoff position, collected four hits in five at-bats with a run. Sophomore outfielder Becky Sansone added three RBIs and a scored run in the nightcap. Williams’ 6-8 hitters (Knox, Mary Gelber, Stephanie Brooks) all went 2-for-4 in the victory.
