SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 4, 2006 – Springfield College sophomore outside hitter Eric Palumbo (Rochester, N.Y.) tallied a match-high 26 kills to go along with nine digs, but it was the East Stroudsburg University Warriors which defeated the Pride, 3-1, in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Conference-Hay Division action this evening at Blake Arena.
East Stroudsburg improves to 9-4 overall on the season and a perfect 5-0 in EIVA-Hay play, as SC falls to 8-11 overall with a 6-3 EIVA-Hay mark. The Warriors won the first two games by scores of 30-27 and 33-31, and after the Pride won a close third game, 35-33, East Stroudsburg finished off the victory with a 30-24 decision in the fourth game.
The Warriors were led by sophomore middle hitter Jon Daley with 19 kills on 30 swings and just four errors for a .500 hitting percentage. Daley led all players in the match with an impressive 11 blocks. Junior middle hitter Tom German registered 15 kills on the night, as sophomore Jeff Quinn recorded 12 kills, 10 blocks, five digs and two service aces in the winning effort.
Freshman outside hitter Ryan Fredrickson (Manahawkin, N.J.) picked up 22 kills despite the loss as he and Palumbo combined for 48 on the night. Sophomore outside hitter Javier Rosario (San Juan, Puerto Rico) chipped in with a team-best 13 digs while adding nine kills.
SC will next travel to Manhattan, N.Y., to take on New York University (NYU) on Thursday evening, March 9, in a 7:00 p.m. start.
