No. 13 Field Hockey Shuts Out Clark University in Worcester, Mass., 2-0

Boxscore

WORCESTER, Mass., September 30, 2006 - Springfield College junior forward Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) scored her fifth goal of the season just 4:15 into the contest as the 13th-ranked Pride downed host Clark University, 2-0, this afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match-up at Granger Field.

For Veazie, it was her third score in as many games as she now has racked up two game-winning goals on the year. Her five scores this season, coupled with her three assists, is good for 13 total points of offense (second on team). The win improves SC to 7-2 overall on the year and a perfect 2-0 in NEWMAC action. The Cougars fall to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Pride led by just the one-goal margin after the first 35 minutes of play. Just under five minutes into the second stanza (39:44), however, sophomore midfielder Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season to give SC some insurance. Kelleher's score, like Veazie's, was unassisted.

That was all the scoring junior goalkeeper Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) needed, as the co-captain made four saves in net for the Pride, improving her overall record to 7-2, while recording her second shutout of the year. SC outshot the Cougars, 16-4, and held a 14-2 edge in penalty corners.

The Pride is now faced with the tough task of traveling to SUNY Cortland to take on the fourth-ranked Red Dragons tomorrow afternoon, October 1st, in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
