Women's Soccer And Field Hockey Qualifies For NCAA Division III Tournament
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., November 7, 2005 – The Springfield College field hockey and women’s soccer teams have both qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournaments through automatic bids, as both squads won their respective New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournaments this past weekend (Nov. 6).
The Pride's women’s soccer team is currently ranked ninth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III New England Region poll, as SC has remained unbeaten in its past 11 matches. The Pride tied Wheaton College, 1-1, in double overtime of the NEWMAC Finals yesterday afternoon (Nov. 6) and defeated the Lyons, 4-3, in penalty kicks to win its first-ever NEWMAC Tournament Championship.
SC has been awarded a first round home contest against Castleton State College on Wednesday evening, November 9, in a 7:00 p.m. start. The Pride’s women’s soccer team, much like the SC field hockey team, is peaking at exactly the right time. SC has not lost since back on September 27, with a streak of 11-straight unbeaten contests.
SC’s field hockey team, which is currently ranked 10th nationally in the latest Division III National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, garners a 20-2 overall record heading into the NCAA Tournament. The Pride will travel to Bowdoin College this weekend for a second round match-up against the Middlebury/Manhattanville winner (Nov. 9). SC’s second round game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, November 12, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowdoin.
SC is peaking at the right time heading into NCAA play, as the Pride has won its last 10 games, and 18 of its past 19 contests. With SC’s 2-1 overtime win over Babson College in the NEWMAC Final, the Pride improved to 8-0 in overtime games this season, as SC has now won two-straight NEWMAC Championships.

Head Coach John Gibson
John Gibson, a native of London, England, enters his 10th season as head women's soccer at Springfield College in the fall of 2009. Gibson has led the Pride to the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four years and has established the Pride as one of the top programs in the country. His clubs have registered an impressive a 110-56-14 record.
