Women's Lacrosse Runs Past Western Connecticut, 9-3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 14, 2005 -- Springfield College sophomore forwards Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) and Kerrigan Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) scored two goals each as the Pride defeated Western Connecticut State University, 9-3, tonight at Benedum Field in women’s lacrosse action.

SC (6-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 22:35 remaining in the first half on Murphy’s two goals and a goal by junior defender Christine Nicol (Farmington, Conn.). Western Conn. went on a 3-1 run to make it a 4-3 game with 10:23 to go in the first half. The Pride ended the period with three unanswered goals to make it a 7-3 score at half time.

The Pride shut out the Colonials (1-8) in the second half, while scoring two goals for the final of 9-2.

Western Conn. goalkeeper Melissa Perry recorded 15 saves on the game, while Pride freshman goalkeeper Kristin Vaccaro (Southington, Conn.) recorded two saves as she faced just five shots.

SC plays host to Babson College in NEWMAC action on Saturday, April 16, at 12:00 pm.
