

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Nov. 10, 2006 – MaryKathryn O’Neil of the Springfield College women’s volleyball team has been named to the ESPN The Magazine All-America women’s volleyball team for District I. O’Neil was also among 19 SC athletes who were recently named to the 2006 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference teams.
O’Neil, a senior middle blocker from Liverpool, N.Y., was one of three SC athletes to be honored by ESPN The Magazine. The other athletes from SC include Brian Rose (Franklin, Mass.), a senior wide receiver from the football team, and Michelle Bongiovanni, (West Springfield, Mass.), a senior midfielder from the women’s soccer team.
O’Neil is currently completing coursework at SC for a major in psychology and a minor in criminal justice. O’Neil, who has been named to the SC Dean’s list multiple times, plans to graduate in the spring of 2007. After graduating from SC, O’Neil aspires to become a forensic psychologist.
In addition to her academic accomplishments, O’Neil was a force on the SC volleyball team. O’Neil played in every game of SC’s 35 matches this season, leading the team in kills (451) and blocks (118). O’Neil ended the season ranked second among all NEWMAC players in hitting percentage (.319) and blocks per game (0.98). This season O’Neil was also among the NEWMAC leaders in kills per game (3.73), finishing fourth in the conference. The Pride’s season ended Saturday (Nov. 4) with a 3-1 loss at Coast Guard in the final round of the NEWMAC post-season tournament. Overall, SC finished with a 27-8 record, including a 7-2 mark in NEWMAC play.
O’Neil will play one final game representing the Pride this year. The senior has been selected to participate in the 2006 New England Women’s Volleyball Association Senior Classic this Sunday (Nov. 12) at Clark University’s Kneller Athletic Center. Joining O’Neil at the classic will be SC teammates Nicole Curtin (Beacon, N.Y.) and Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.).
Joel Dearing will enter his 20th season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2008. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 638-293 (.685) overall mark in 27 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
