No. 8 Wrestling Finishes 31st At Division III Championships

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Springfield College sophomore All-American
Mike Gaeta ( Manalapan N.J.) placed seventh in the 141-pound class leading the Pride to a 31st-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships at Northfield, Minnesota on Saturday.
Gaeta opened the tournament with a 11-5 loss to Wartburg’s Dustin Hinschberger, the number-one seed in the weight class, but won three consolation matches including a pin of Montclair’s Dennis McSweeney. Gaeta finished the season with an overall record of 41-8.
The Pride also received strong performances from senior captain
Brian Viglione (Chelmsford, Mass.) and sophomore
Mark DeCiccio (Cranston, R.I.). In the 174-pound class, Viglione started off with an upset of second-seeded Mark Sturm of Wartburg 5-2, but lost his next two matches to end the season with an overall record of 29-13. DeCiccio advanced past the first round by defeating Oneonta's Rory Tibias, 6-1, but endured two-straight losses, including to number-one seeded Clint Manny of Simpson, in the 149-pound class.
Augsburg College won the team championship with a score of 162.0, outdistancing second-place Wartburg (104.5). The Pride scored 9.5 points finishing 31st out of 60 teams at the meet.

Under his tutelage, the Springfield College wrestling program has posted a 278-151-6 overall dual-meet record, good for an outstanding .646 winning percentage.
