Eastern Connecticut Snaps Baseball's Three-Game Winning Streak, 11-5

Box Score/Play-by-Play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 11, 2007 – Springfield College senior centerfielder Chris Stack (Albany, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 from the leadoff position with one run batted in (RBI), but it was the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) which defeated the Pride, 11-5, this afternoon in a non-conference baseball contest at Berry-Allen Field.

The loss snaps SC’s three-game winning streak, as the Pride falls to 5-14 overall on the season. The Warriors improve to 14-7 overall on the year. Junior right-hander Joe Esposito picked up his first victory of the season for Eastern Connecticut, throwing six complete innings and allowing just four hits, no runs, while striking out eight. Sophomore righty Jacob Feist (Allentown, Pa.) was tagged with the loss for SC, giving up four earned runs in six innings of work.

With the game still scoreless heading into the top half of the fourth inning, the Warriors broke through. Sophomore designated hitter Shawn Gilblair, senior centerfielder Randy Re, sophomore first baseman Tristan Hobbes, and senior catcher Matt Cooney all picked up one RBI each to give ECSU a 4-0 advantage.

The Warriors would plate three more runners in the top half of the seventh inning and two more runners in the top half of the eighth inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The Pride would attempt a rally in the bottom half of the eighth inning, scoring five, but it was too little too late, as Eastern Connecticut scored twice more in the top of the ninth for the 11-5 victory.

SC will next return to New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action when it hosts Clark University on Friday afternoon, April 13th, in a 3:30 p.m. start at Berry-Allen Field.
