SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – February 12, 2007 – Junior guard Tara McCarthy of Springfield College has been named this week’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s basketball Co-Player of the Week.
McCarthy is sharing the honors with senior forward Suzy Ward of Babson College.
In a 2-1 week for the Pride, McCarthy became the 11th player in Springfield College women's basketball history to score her 1000th career point. She accomplished that feat during a 66-55 victory at Smith last Saturday, and has already moved into the #10 slot with her 1,009 career points.
On the week, McCarthy averaged 15.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 1.0 steals, while shooting .459 from the floor (17-of-37), .444 from 3-point range (8-of-18), and .714 from the free throw line (5-of-7).
In a 59-54 loss at Western New England last Tuesday, Tara scored 9 points, adding 7 rebounds and 4 assists. In a 71-65 come-from-behind effort at home against Worcester State last Thursday (SC was down by 20 in the second half), the Bristol, RI native had 18 points and 9 assists.
In the win at Smith last Saturday, she had 20 points, and was credited with four assists, and two steals. In that game, she was 7-of-13 from the field, and 5-of-8 from 3-point range.
Tara's 3-point shooting percentage (.408) still leads the NEWMAC by a wide margin.
Springfield next plays at Clark University on Wednesday (Feb. 14) at 5:30 p.m., before hosting Wheaton College on Saturday (Feb. 17) at 3:00 p.m.
Entering her 19th season as head coach in 2009-10, Naomi Graves has directed her squads to an impressive 266-117 record (.695 winning percentage) since joining the Division III ranks in 1995. Graves has led the Pride to eleven post-season bids in the past 14 years, including five berths in the NCAA Division III Tournament in the past nine years.
