Field Hockey Tops Wellesley, 4-1; Advances To NEWMAC Final
BABSON PARK, MASS., November 5, 2005 -- The second-seeded Springfield College Pride scored the first three goals of the game on its way to a 4-1 victory over the third-seeded Wellesley College Blue in the semifinals of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday (Nov. 5) at Babson College. With the win, SC (19-2), ranked 10th in the country, advances to Sunday’s championship game, where the Pride will meet top-seeded Babson, ranked 16th in the nation, at 1:00 p.m.
SC controlled the contest from the start, scoring three times in the first 24 minutes of play. Senior Jaclyn Galligan (Hopedale, Mass.) tallied the first two goals on nearly identical penalty corners at 23:32 and 20:06, with sophomore Eileen Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) and senior tri-captain Erin Bosch (Shoreham, N.Y.) picking up assists on both plays. Senior Alisha Miner (Sanbornton, N.H.) then scored off a feed from senior tri-captain Sarah Brooker (Auburn, Maine) with 11:30 remaining in the first half to give the Pride a 3-0 advantage.
Wellesley (12-6) got one goal back just before the half, as junior Lydia Parzych recorded an unassisted goal with 3:02 remaining. However, Bosch would score Springfield’s fourth goal with 23:27 left in the second stanza to push the lead back to three, and Pride sophomore goalie Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) made five saves in net to clinch the 4-1 victory.
