Men's Track & Field Finishes Second At NEWMAC Championships

WORCESTER, Mass., April 30, 2005 – Springfield College senior All-American Justin Welch (Woburn, Mass.) won the high jump (6 feet, 5 ¼ inches) as the Pride took second place at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Track & Field Championships on Saturday at WPI.

MIT won the meet with 246 points followed by the Pride (200), Coast Guard (167), WPI (78), Wheaton College (54), and Babson College (15).

Sophomore Tetsuji Kambara (Osaka, Japan) took first place in the 10,000 meters (33:05.29) to earn his second-consecutive NEWMAC crown after winning the 5,000 meters in 2004. Sophomore Jeff Cogan (Walworth, N.Y.) was victorious in the triple jump (43-6.50) while freshman Joe Dubuc (South Hadley, Mass.) ran to victory in the 110- meter hurdles in 15.93 seconds.

Second-team All-NEWMAC honors for the Pride included seniors Pat DeRocco (Utica, N.Y.) in the 800 (1:56.00), Jason Burnell (Poland, Maine) in the 400 intermediate hurdles (56.06), sophomores Alex Kampersol (Natick, Mass.) in the shot put (50-6),Cameron Turchetti (S. Deerfield, Mass.)in the javelin (169-10) and freshmen Nick DeCelle (Mechanicville, N.Y.) in the triple jump (43-3).

SC is the host of the Division III New England Men’s Track & Field Championships starting on Thursday, May 3, at 3:00 pm and continuing through Saturday May 5.
