No. 5 Men's Basketball Travels to Fourth-Seeded Wheaton on Tuesday
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 20, 2006 - Both of Springfield College’s basketball teams will be playing first-round New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference post-season tourney games next Tuesday (Feb. 21) at 7 pm.
The men, as a result of their 5th-place conference finish, will be the #5 seed and will thus play on the road at #4-seeded Wheaton at the Lyons’ Emerson Gymnasium Tuesday, also at 7 pm. These two teams split this past season, with the home team holding quite an advantage. On January 10 in Norton, Mass., Wheaton defeated SC, 83-63, in what proved to be Springfield’s worst loss of the season. On Saturday, Feb. 4, SC then defeated Wheaton at home, 84-65, in what turned out to be SC’s biggest NEWMAC win of the year. In other men’s first-round match-ups, #7 Babson is at #2 MIT, and #6 Clark is at #3 Coast Guard. #1 WPI awaits the #4-5 winner for a NEWMAC semifinal match-up on Saturday, Feb. 25 at WPI. Springfield has won one NEWMAC post-season tournament, doing so in 1999-2000, Head Coach Charlie Brock’s second year at the Springfield helm. Earlier this afternoon, MIT defeated Springfield, 62-61, at Blake Arena.
The women, as a result of their first place conference finish, will be the #1 seed and host 8th-seeded Wellesley College at SC’s Blake Arena on Tuesday at 7. In their only meeting this season on Saturday (Feb. 4), Springfield defeated Wellesley on the road, 74-62. In other women’s first-round match-ups, #7 Wheaton will be at #2 Mount Holyoke, #6 Coast Guard will be at #3 WPI, and #5 Babson will be at #4 Clark. Earlier this afternoon, Wheaton defeated Springfield, 85-73, in Norton, Mass., thus spoiling SC’s chance to become just the second team in NEWMAC history to go through an entire conference season unscathed. At 9-0, the Springfield team of 2001-02 was the only other NEWMAC team to go through the conference portion of the season unblemished. This season, the Springfield women finished the regular season at 19-6 overall, and 12-1 in the NEWMAC. SC has won four of the past five NEWMAC Tournament titles, and is now looking to make it 5 of 6 in that category. A win Tuesday means SC will host the semifinals and final on Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 25-26.

Head Coach Charlie Brock
Charlie Brock in 2009-10 will enter his 12th season as the head coach at Springfield College. Brock’s achievements as a coach are certainly impressive, as he has taken three schools to the NCAA Division III Tournament and has an overall, 29-year record of 394-363 for a winning percentage of .520.
