Middlebury Defeats Field Hockey, 4-1, in a Battle of Unbeatens

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 11, 2007) – In a battle of highly-ranked unbeaten squads, the Middlebury College field hockey team defeated Springfield College, 4-1, this evening in a game played at the newly-renamed and newly- resurfaced Stagg Field (formerly known as Benedum Field).

With the loss, Springfield, ranked #15 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll released earlier today, is now 4-1 on the young season. Middlebury, which jumped two spots in the poll to the #5 spot, is now 2-0.

Springfield wasted little time in getting on the board, as senior Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Me.) scored just 56 seconds into the contest. The goal was unassisted.

But Middlebury tied it at the 10:54 mark as senior midfielder Lacey Farrell (Greenwich, Conn.) found the back of the net. The score was tied, 1-1, at the half.

The second half belonged to the Panthers. Senior attacker Reid Berrien (Westport, Conn.) broke the deadlock with a tally with 16:19 left. Farrell assisted on that goal. Berrien scored again less than five minutes later (with 11:41 left) to up the margin to 3-1.

The last goal came with just 1:45 left as sophomore attacker Sarah Bryan (Houston, Texas) pumped one home.

Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Pentifallo (River Edge, N.J.) survived that first shaky minute to record seven saves overall for Middlebury. Springfield senior keeper Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) was credited with 17 saves.

Middlebury outshot the Pride, 21-8.

Up next, Springfield will play at Connecticut College on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 4:00 pm. Middlebury will play Saturday, Sept. 15 at Tufts at 1:00 pm.
