Andrew Constant's Come-From-Behind Singles Win Lifts Men's Tennis Over Babson, 5-4

BABSON PARK, Mass., April 21, 2007 - Springfield College sophomore Andrew Constant (Kingston, N.Y.) rallied from a set down to claim a thrilling three-set tie-break victory at first singles to propel the Pride to a 5-4 win over host Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s tennis match-up on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, SC finishes the regular-season with a record of 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while Babson falls to 4-17 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC. The Pride has earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament and will host the No. 6 seed on Thursday afternoon, April 26th, in a 3:30 p.m. opening-round match.

Babson took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, thanks to a 9-8 (4) tie-break win at number two by the tandem of seniors Doug Tough and Mike Perkins. The Pride then followed with straight-set singles wins by senior Ethan Clime (Bristol, Me.) at number three, junior Rahul Bala (Enfield, Conn.) at four, and first-year Trevor Romanzi (Bayshore, N.Y.) at five, but the Beavers responded with victories by junior Ben Edick at number two and sophomore Brian Lafayette at number six to even the match at 4-4.

The final match of the day pitted Constant against Babson first-year Alex Kamergorodsky at number one. Kamergorodsky took the first set, 6-4, but Constant fought back for a 6-3 victory in the second. The final set then went to a tie-breaker, with Constant winning 7-6 (5) to clinch the match and the overall victory.
