SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- September 1, 2007 -- Despite holding a two game to one lead, the Springfield College women’s volleyball team fell to Colby-Sawyer in five games in the championship match of the Springfield Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Pride fell by the score 27-30, 30-25, 30-22, 20-30, 8-15. With the loss, the Pride falls to 2-1 on the season while the Chargers improve to 3-0.
The Chargers rattled off eight straight points after trailing 25-20 en route to claiming the first game by a score of 30-27. Michelle Doody led the way for CSC in the first game with four kills. Springfield grabbed their first game of the match by a score of 30-25 in the second stanza. Using a 9-4 run to close out the game, which sparked by a pair of kills from Katie Stanley, evened the contest at a game apiece.
In a back and forth game three, the Pride used a Stanley kill at the 16 all mark to ignite a 14-6 run to grab a 30-22 victory. Springfield took advantage of the Chargers hitting just .095 in the stanza to take two games to one advantage. However, the Chargers opened up the fourth game on a 15-8 run and never looked back as they went on to knot the contest at two by the score of 30-20.
Colby Sawyer carried on that momentum into the fifth as they took the final game 15-8. The Pride managed to hit just -.211 in the final game as it dropped its first match of the 2007 campaign.
Springfield had four players who registered double-digit kills in the match. All-Tournament team selections Aylene Ilkson and Heidi Yohe each notched 15 kills in the match as Ilkson chipped in with a game-high 23 digs and Yohe added nine. Bethany Stosz added 13 kills while Lindsay Marone recorded her first double-double of the year with a 10-kill, 11-dig performance. Kelsea Hellyar led the Pride with 49 assists in the game and Jessica Baldwin picked up 20 digs and four aces in the match.
Doody, an All-Tournament selection, ended the game with 15 kills while Kristen Romanko added 13 for the Chargers. All-Tournament selection Taylor Forseberg recorded 22 digs in the match and the Tournament MVP, Genny Moore, directed the Charger offense with 44 assists and 11 digs. Alex Toregas of the University of New England and Sherri Heard of Rhode Island College were also chosen to the All-Tournament team.
In its first game of the day, the Springfield College women’s volleyball team topped Rhode Island College in three games, 30-24, 30-26, 30-19, Saturday morning in Blake Arena. Using a balanced offensive attack, the Pride moved to 2-0 on the season as five different players recorded at least five kills in the match. Leading the way in the contest was Marone, who notched 10 kills.
In the first game with the score knotted at 19 apiece, the Pride once again was able to close out its opponent, ending the game on an 11-5 run to grab the 30-24 victory. In the second game, Springfield found itself trailing throughout until a Marone kill put the home squad up for good at 22-21. In the final game of the contest, the Pride raced out to a 13-4 lead after a Hellyar kill and never looked back en route to a 30-19 victory.
Ilkson paced the Pride with eight kills and a match-high 16 digs while Yohe registered seven kills, four aces, and 11 digs. Stanley added seven kills while Stosz chipped in with five. Hellyar directed the offense and finished with 28 assists. For the second straight game, the Pride’s defense was the story, holding RIC to a .009 hitting percentage as a team in the match.
