

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 21, 2006 - Meghan Gaskell and Stacy Schlicht pitched complete-game victories to lead the Babson College softball team to a sweep of Springfield College, 4-2 and 6-1, this afternoon in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at SC’s Potter Field.
The wins allowed Babson to clinch the NEWMAC regular-season title with one day to go in conference play. The Beavers are now 27-9 overall and 11-3 in the NEWMAC. Springfield, which held destiny in its own hands at the start of the day with regards to the NEWMAC post-season tourney, fell to 19-18 overall and 7-7 in the conference. SC fell from third to sixth in the conference standings with one day to go. With 8-6 marks, Coast Guard, Smith, and Wellesley are all tied for second at the moment. Wheaton finished with a 9-7 league mark, and is currently in fifth place.
In game #1, in the top of the first inning, Babson leadoff hitter Andrea Cartullo (Holbrook, Mass.) struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. The junior centerfielder eventually scored on an RBI-single by junior second baseman Alex Lazar (Milton, Mass.).
In the bottom of the second, Springfield tied matters at 1-all as senior designated player Sarah Bagierek (Douglas, Mich.) belted a home run to left center.
But Babson countered with three in the top of the third. With one out and the bases loaded, senior catcher Erica Barry (Malden, Mass.) singled one run home. Later with two outs, junior third baseman Robyn Woodruff (Clifton, N.J.) singled to center, scoring two more runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Pride closed to within 4-2 when senior shortstop Caitlin McGaughey (South Windsor, Conn.) doubled home a run.
Gaskell, a senior from Uxbridge, Mass., earned the victory. Now 13-3, Gaskell allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out nine, and walking one. The loss went to SC sophomore Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, Conn.). She is now 9-9.
In game #2, the Beavers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half inning. The first run scored on a bases loaded error. Later, sophomore leftfielder Jess Byrn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) singled to knock in two more.
Babson took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third. Barry led off with a single. She eventually scored on an error on a mishandled catch by the second baseman at first base.
The Beavers took a 5-0 lead in the fifth. Gaskell led off with a double to right center. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI-groundout to the shortstop by Byrn.
Springfield finally scored in the bottom of the fifth. McGaughey was hit by a pitch with one out. She eventually scored on a pinch-hit double to right center by freshman Aimee Cassella (Southington, Conn.).
Babson scored its final run in the top of the sixth. Cartullo singled to left with one out. Then with two outs, Lazar doubled to knock in Cartullo.
For the Beavers, Schlicht, a junior right-hander from Hillsborough, Calif., gave up just three hits and one run, striking out five and walking no one. She is now 8-5. For the Pride, freshman left-hander Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) took the loss. She is now 8-4. Rhodes lasted just three-plus innings.
Cartullo went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader, also scoring three runs. Gaskell was 3-for-7 at the plate, scoring three runs.
Tomorrow, Springfield is at MIT for a doubleheader at 12 noon. Babson, meanwhile, hosts Clark for two beginning at noon.
Julie Perrelli was been named an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Head Softball Coach at Springfield College in June of 2009. The head softball coach at Smith for the past three years, Perrelli received both her doctorate (this past May) and her masters in 2004 from Springfield College, where she served as a graduate assistant for the Pride from the 2003 through 2006 seasons.
