Field Hockey Picks Up Big Win Against Wheaton, 4-2, in Battle of NEWMAC Unbeatens
BoxscoreSPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 14, 2006 – The Springfield College field hockey team defeated Wheaton College, 4-2, this afternoon in an important battle of New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) unbeatens at SC’s Benedum Field in front of a Homecoming Day crowd.
With the win, 16th-ranked Springfield is now 11-3 overall and 6-0 in NEWMAC play, while Wheaton falls to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference. SC has now won four straight, while Wheaton had a six-game winning streak snapped.
In today’s game, the score was 1-1 at the half. Springfield junior forward Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine), the reigning NEWMAC Co-Player of the Week, gave the home team a 1-0 lead at the 14:20 mark. But Wheaton junior forward Lyndsie Ryalls tied it about five minutes later. There was a rare double assist awarded on Ryalls' goal, to sophomore forward Alisa Ardito and junior forward Sarah Dimick.
It remained 1-1 early in the second half, but then Springfield exploded for three goals in a span of 7:18. Veazie began it all with her second score of the game at 41:18. Her goal was assisted by sophomore forward Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.). Then it was Kelleher scoring twice, her 14th and 15th goals of the season, at 46:10 and 48:36. Both goals were assisted by junior forward Eileen Jenkins (Gorham, Maine).
The Lyons then answered with just 3:59 remaining to close it to 4-2 on a tally by sophomore forward Rachel Alfiero.
Each goalkeeper played the full 70 minutes. For Springfield, junior Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) was credited with 16 saves, while for Wheaton, senior Mary Catherine Boll was credited with 15 saves.
Up next, Springfield will host Ithaca College tomorrow afternoon, October 15th, at 1:00 p.m. in a non-conference tilt. Wheaton will next host Wellesley College in a league contest on Tuesday afternoon, October 17th at 4:00 p.m.
