Palumbo, Fredrickson and Sipe Named to AVCA All-America Teams

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., April 4, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore outside hitter Eric Palumbo (Rochester, N.Y.) has been named to the 2006 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III All-America First-Team, in an announcement made late Monday afternoon, April 3.

In the same announcement, freshmen Ryan Fredrickson (Manahawkin, N.J.) and Andrew Sipe (New Oxford, Pa.) were both named to the All-America Second-Team.

Palumbo, a native of Rochester, N.Y., has led the Pride this season in kills with a total of 395 for the year, good for a 4.39 kill per game average. The Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Division III Player of the Week on February 12th, Palumbo has attacked at a .240 clip this season for SC, while adding averages of 1.46 digs per game (131 total), .43 blocks per game (39 total), and .31 aces per game (28 total). In the Pride’s latest effort, a 3-1 loss to New York University (NYU) in the EIVA Division III Semifinals, Palumbo registered a season-best 28 kills with just eight errors on 49 swings for a .408 hitting percentage.

Fredrickson, an outside hitter from Manahawkin, N.J., has compiled a very impressive rookie campaign for SC, ranked sixth as a team in Division III. Fredrickson has put together 329 kills on the season, good for second on the squad behind Palumbo and a 4.06 kill per game average. In a home match against NYU back on February 25th, the first-year racked up a notable 30 kills on 53 swings for a .321 hitting percentage.

Sipe, a middle blocker from New Oxford, Pa., leads SC in blocking by a wide margin this year, with a total of 109 and an average of 1.24 per game. Sipe has also chipped in with 169 kills on the season for a 1.92 kill per game average (third on team), as he has recorded a team-best 32 service aces in his rookie campaign. The March 28th EIVA Division III Player of the Week compiled 10 blocks and seven kills in a home match against Juniata College back on March 24th.

The Pride currently stands with a 10-14 overall record on the 2006 season as it will next host the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Friday evening, April 14, in a 7:00 p.m. start at Blake Arena.
