Men's Gymnastics Compiles Second-Highest G.P.A. In the Nation
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. July 29, 2004 -- Springfield College men's gymnastics registered the second-highest team grade point average (g.p.a.) in the nation as the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) All-American Committee recognized the top 15 teams and the top 41 individuals in Division I, II, and III.
The Pride accumulated a team g.p.a. of 3.223, second to only Stanford’s 3.382 for its fourth-straight top-six finish. SC senior captain Mike Smith (Salt Lake, Utah) earned his fourth Academic All-America honor, while sophomore James Brennan (Dracut, Mass.) was one of only five student athletes with a perfect 4.0 g.p.a.
To receive Academic All-America statues, student-athletes must attain at least a 3.50 g.p.a in addition to earning a minimum NCAA gymnastics score of 8.0 during the 2003-2004 academic years.
Five SC gymnasts earned All-American Scholar-Athlete honors. Brennan’s 4.0 led the way for the Pride as Smith finished second (3.83), followed by sophomore Andrew Malaby (West Warwick, R.I.), 3.76 g.p.a., junior Robert Sander (Columbia, Mont.), 3.73 g.p.a., and senior Jason Delisle (Tolland, Conn.), 3.50 g.p.a..
