SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - November 3, 2007 - The Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team cruised past Smith College, 177-119, on Saturday afternoon at the Art Linkletter Natatorium.
The Pride had several outstanding performances in the meet to lead it to its first home victory of the 2007-08 campaign.
Three members of the squad each picked up a pair of individual wins in the meet. Megan Cooney (Hummelstown, Pa.) picked up wins in the 100 backstroke (1:06.52) and the 200 backstroke (2:19.04) while Emily Sheahan (Erin, N.Y.) touched first in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.08) and the 200 breaststroke (2:41.81). All-American Moira Price (Berkeley, Heights, N.J.) finished first in the 50 freestyle (25.56) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:23.34).
Also touching first in the meet was the Pride’s “A” relay team in the 400 freestyle in a time of 3:50.26. The relay team consisted of Aimee Doe (Haverhill, Mass.), Kelley Ockerbloom (South Yarmouth, Mass), Meredith Trumbull (Merrimac, Mass.), and Price.
There were plenty of standouts on the diving boards as well as several national qualifying scores recorded. Shanti Freitas of Smith won both the 1-meter (265.35) and the 3-meter (291.20). For the Pride, Melissa Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) finished second in the 3-meter with a national-qualifying score of 271.20 while Michelle Reggio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also qualified with a score of 262.25. On the 1-meter, Reggio placed second with a score of 216.50 and All-American Erin White (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished third with a 216.05. Both scores were national-qualifying marks.
The Pride returns to action next Saturday when it heads to Rhode Island to take on URI. The meet is slated for 1:00 p.m.
