Women's Gymnastics Open 2005 Season With High Hopes
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 7, 2005 -- Springfield College opens the 2005 women’s gymnastics season Saturday at the New York Cup at Cortland (N.Y.). The Pride will compete with Brockport, Ithaca, Wisconsin-Stout and the host school beginning at 1 p.m.
SC is coming of an eight-win 2004 campaign that included a thrilling season-opening victory over Division I Yale, and wins over top D-III programs in Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Cortland and Ithaca. The Pride's solid 8-10 overall mark is somewhat deceiving as four of the losses were to D-I or D-II programs.
Although seven talented freshmen dot the '05 roster, head coach Cheryl Raymond welcomes back a veteran roster including junior Larissa Tabin (Holyoke, Mass.). Tabin was an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Conference choice in ’04, placing fourth in the floor exercise (9.000). She qualified for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championships in that event.
Sophomore Kerriann Hart (Hanover, Mass.) is coming off a record-breaking first-year campaign. She set a school record in the all-around on two occasions in ’04, the latest record of 37.475 coming in a tri-meet with Southern Connecticut and Bridgeport on Feb. 22. Hart, who recorded top-10 efforts on the uneven bars (9th/9.350) and the all-around (10th/36.500) at the 2004 ECAC championships, should vie for all-conference accolades this season, especially with Springfield College hosting the championship on March 19.
Jillian Silverman (Ipswich, Mass.) is another sophomore to keep an eye on. Silverman turned in a strong performance in her collegiate debut, finishing second on the vault (9.200) as the Pride upset Yale on Jan. 10 in the season opener. Jillian Pacheco (Hyannis, Mass.) and Heather Tuden (Londonderry, N.H.), both sophomores, and junior Lyndsay Roy (North Andover, Mass.) should also make major contributions.
