Softball Defeats Wheaton, 4-1, Behind Complete Game from Blackman

Boxscore/Play-by-Play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 2, 2006 – Springfield College sophomore second baseman Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.) went 2-for-4, including a big two-run single in the bottom half of the sixth inning, enabling the Pride to defeat Wheaton College, 4-1, this afternoon in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at SC’s Potter Field.

The game played today was the second of two played between these teams this weekend. Yesterday, SC defeated Wheaton, 9-4, also at Potter Field. The second game of yesterday’s doubleheader was rained out, thus necessitating today’s make-up contest.

With today’s victory, Springfield is 10-10 overall, and 4-2 in the NEWMAC entering this afternoon’s later contest versus Keene State College. Springfield is tied for second in the conference with WPI in terms of win percentage (.667). Babson remains in first place with an unbeaten mark of 2-0 within league play. Wheaton is now 13-7 overall and 2-2 in the NEWMAC.

Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in this game, pushing a run across in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI-double by freshman catcher Lynn Cotto (Brookfield, Conn.). Later in the inning, Wheaton had a runner thrown out in a rundown between third and home.

Springfield came right back in the bottom of the fourth when senior catcher Amanda Johansson (Leominster, Mass.) smashed a line-drive home run well over the left field fence on the first pitch she saw in the inning. SC scored another in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead on a single to left by freshman leftfielder Kasey Calderone (Pipersville, Penn.).

The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Pride until the bottom of the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Fumicello lined a soft single up the middle which was knocked down, as she was called safe at second on a close play, and with the runner at second wheeling all the way around, two runs were able to score.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, a walk and a single allowed the tying run to come to the plate for the Lyons. But junior rightfielder Nicole Lachance (Rochester, N.H.) grounded back to the pitcher to end the game.

For Springfield, sophomore pitcher Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, Conn.) picked up the victory, her second in as many days against Wheaton. Now 5-4, Blackman scattered seven hits while allowing just the one run, walking two and striking out one.

Also, senior first baseman Keir Stanford (Melrose, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a double and a scored run for the Pride.

For Wheaton, the losing pitcher was sophomore Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, Mass.), now 7-3 on the season. In six innings, Moynagh allowed nine hits and four runs, walking two and striking out six.
