Women's Soccer Downs Babson, 4-0
Box ScoreBABSON PARK, Mass. – Springfield College scored three times in the first half on its way to a 4-0 victory over host Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer matchup at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Pride improved to 10-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the conference, while the Beavers suffered their first NEWMAC loss to fall to 7-5-0 overall and 3-1-0 in league play.
Springfield took advantage of almost every opportunity in the opening period, scoring three goals on five total shots. Sophomore Caitlin Sawczuk (Plainville, Conn.) put the Pride on the board at 17:34, as she took a lead pass from junior Lauren Peltier (Agawam, Mass.) up the middle of the field and broke in all alone on sophomore keeper Sam Scarpato (Weston, Mass.). Sawczuk then veered to the right side and blasted a shot past the Beavers' goalie and inside the right post for what would turn out to be the game-winner.
The Pride made it 2-0 a little over three minutes later, when junior Nicole Hanewich (Smithfield, R.I.) received a pass from sophomore Jillian Pereira (East Providence, R.I.) and broke free down the left side. Scarpato came charging out to meet the Springfield forward, who lofted a shot over her and into the far right corner for the game's second goal at 20:50.
Springfield put the finishing touches on the 3-0 half at 28:58, as first-year Brittany Collins (South Windsor, Conn.) received a pass in the middle of the Babson backfield, cut back across the defense, and launched a perfect left-footed shot that curved into the lower right corner from 20 yards out.
Babson finally mounted some offensive pressure in the second half, putting up six shots to Springfield's one. However, the Beavers were only able to get one shot on net in the period, which was handled easily by junior keeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.). Meanwhile, the Pride scored on their only attempt of the half when Hanewich hit a shot from the top of the box that deflected off charging first-year keeper Kristy Benoit (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and in with 54 seconds remaining in regulation.
Jenney finished with two saves in net for Springfield as she earned her sixth shutout of the season.

Head Coach John Gibson
John Gibson, a native of London, England, enters his 10th season as head women's soccer at Springfield College in the fall of 2009. Gibson has led the Pride to the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four years and has established the Pride as one of the top programs in the country. His clubs have registered an impressive a 110-56-14 record.
