Chris Sharpe Accepts the ECAC Division III Northwest Co-Player of the Year Award

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – February 15, 2007 – Junior quarterback Chris Sharpe of Springfield College tonight accepted the ECAC Division III Northwest Offensive Player of the Year Award at the Pegasus Restaurant at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. Sharpe shared the award with Union College senior running back Tom Arcidiacono.

A Derry, New Hampshire native and Pinkerton Academy graduate, Sharpe put up some very impressive numbers during the past year as quarterback and captain of the Pride, which finished 10-2, won the Empire 8 Conference co-championship, and reached the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Sharpe led the nation (Division III) this past season in average yards rushing per game (161.8), average points per game (17.7), and touchdowns (35).

Sharpe led the Pride in all major offensive categories, breaking six NCAA Division III records and 12 Springfield College records in the process. The 5-9, 204-pounder completed the season with a school-record 1,941 total rushing yards and an NCAA Division III record 35 touchdowns for a quarterback.

Sharpe’s other post-season accolades included; AP Little All-America (Second Team), D3football.com All-American (honorable mention), Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-American (honorable mention), Don Hansen’s Football Gazette East Region Offensive Back of the Year and First Team All-East Region, New England Football Writers Gold Helmet Award for the Season (New England Div. II/III Player of the Year), the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Joseph P. Zabilski Award (New England Div. II/III Player of the Year), First Team All-New England, Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year, as well as Empire 8 Offensive First Team.

He has also been named to the D3football.com All-East Region Offensive First Team as selected in balloting by Eastern regional sports information directors and the D3football.com staff.

Head Coach Mike DeLong Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 28th season as a head football coach in the fall of 2009. He enters his 26th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 25 years (1984 through 2008, inclusive), he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
