Women's Soccer Blanks WPI, 2-0, on 'Senior Night'
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 24, 2006 – On Springfield College’s 'Senior Night', three seniors contributed to the Pride’s 2-0 victory over the WPI Engineers. Senior forward Annemarie Goodwin (Springfield, Mass.) netted the first of two SC goals at the 13:09 mark en route to the Pride's 11th win of the season.
SC took clear control of possession and the match early on. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Peltier (Agawam, Mass.) narrowly missed a goal during the first 10 minutes, as the ball ricocheted off the right post. Only minutes later, Goodwin headed the ball into the back net, ending a five-player skirmish for possession in front of WPI’s net.
Despite outshooting the Engineers 12-1 in the first half, the Pride would not score again until the 80th minute of regulation when senior Kristen DiTommaso (Ocean, N.J.) broke the silence. The goal, DiTommaso’s second of the season, was assisted by classmate Jessica Denehey (Whately, Mass.).
Springfield College outshot the Engineers 22-4 overall, holding a 12-2 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. WPI managed only two shots on the frame.
Goalie for the Engineers, Elizabeth Glasson, recorded 10 saves in tonight’s effort. During the first half of play, Pride goalkeeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) went unchallenged. Her second-half replacement, Amanda Petri (East Granby, Conn.), put aside two shots-on-goal including one point-blank attempt. Jenney recorded tonight’s victory, improving her mark to a solid 9-2 for the season.
With the win, the Pride improves to an overall record of 11-4 (6-2 NEWMAC) and takes sole possession of second place entering the NEWMAC Tournament. WPI drops to a mark of 6-9-1 (2-5-1 NEWMAC). As the No. 8 seed, the Engineers will face Wheaton College in the first round of the NEWMAC tourney.
Springfield College women’s soccer is proud to host the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament on Saturday, September 28th. The Pride will play host to No. 7 Clark University. The two teams will face-off at 1:00 p.m. at Brock-Affleck Field.

Head Coach John Gibson
John Gibson, a native of London, England, enters his 10th season as head women's soccer at Springfield College in the fall of 2009. Gibson has led the Pride to the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four years and has established the Pride as one of the top programs in the country. His clubs have registered an impressive a 110-56-14 record.
