Women's Basketball Falls to William Paterson, 67-59, in Season Opener at the DeSales Invitational

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- November 17, 2007-- Senior co-captain Christine Cotter scored a team-high 18 points and freshman guard Rachelle Walker added 16, but it was not enough as the Springfield College women's basketball team lost, 67-59, to William Paterson this evening in the season opener for both teams at the De Sales Invitational in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.

A native of Stoughton, Mass., Cotter tallied 18 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the floor, 2-of-4 from three-point range, and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Walker, who hails from Lee, Mass., had a successful collegiate debut with her 16 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. She was 3-of-5 from three-point range.

Others who contributed for the Pride included freshman center Amelia Sapowsky (Ware, Mass.) with 8 points; junior center Lauren O'Connor (Valhalla, N.Y.) with 7 points and a game-high 14 rebounds; and junior reserve forward Liz Brosseau (Franklin, Mass.) with 5 points and 4 rebounds. Junior Corey Finch (Hanover, Pa.) was credited with 4 points and 7 rebounds.

It was 32-24 in favor of William Paterson at the half. The largest lead was 11 by William Paterson with 1:26 remaining in the first half. There were only two lead changes and 1 tie in the contest as William Paterson had control almost throughout. WPU was led by Michelle Pelichero with 22 points, and by Julie Haledjian with 16 points and 5 assists. William Paterson shot .404 from the field for the game, while Springfield shot .377 in the same category. SC shot .800 (4-of-5) from three-point range in the second half (and made 5-of-9 for the game) to help keep it close. The Pride, however, was greatly affected by some ragged play (28 turnovers).

Springfield will next play Widener, an 81-59 loser to host De Sales in the evening's opener, tomorrow (Sunday) in the consolation game at 1 pm. The Pride will look forward to the return tomorrow of senior co-captain Tara McCarthy (Bristol, R.I.), who missed tonight's game due to an important exam.
