MCLA Defeats Baseball, 6-4, in Non-Conference Tilt
Boxscore/Play-By-Play
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 10, 2006 – Springfield College senior third baseman
Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) went 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI, but the Pride fell to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), 6-4, this afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.
SC (10-11) jumped out to an early, 1-0 first-inning lead after senior shortstop
Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) walked, stole second, and later scored on an RBI groundout by senior catcher
Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.). MCLA answered right back, however, scoring three runs in the second and two more in the third to take a 5-1 lead.
The Blazers’ (14-7) 14-hit performance was led by senior first baseman Matt Murphy (Jamaica Plains, Mass.), and sophomores Darren Jefferson (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Anthony Bruno (Queens, N.Y), all of whom had three hits and one RBI apiece.
The Pride closed the gap to a two-run deficit (5-3) in the fifth inning after sophomore first baseman
Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.) crushed a solo homer to left field, his second of the season.
Down 6-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Yvon drove in SC’s fourth run of the ballgame, but MCLA reliever Cory Burtman (Norwood, Mass.) struck out Hingston for the final out of the game, leaving two Pride runners on base. Burtman picked up his first save of the season.
MCLA starting freshman Andrew Gaines (Holyoke, Mass.) pitched eight strong innings, allowing three runs while striking out five to improve his record to 5-0 on the season. SC starting pitcher
Joe Carlos (Wilbraham, Mass.) lost his third decision of the season, falling to 1-3.
The Pride will return to New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition tomorrow afternoon, April 11, in a 3:30 p.m. start at WPI.
