SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 6, 2007) – The Springfield College wrestling team managed to win four individual bouts, but fell well short in a dual meet with Boston University, 26-13, tonight at SC’s Blake Arena.
Ranked #2 in the All-New England poll, Boston University upped its record to 7-6, while Springfield ended its dual-meet season at 10-13. SC is currently ranked #6 in the latest New England Division III poll, #10 in the overall poll.
Winners for BU included freshman Abbie Rush (Triadelphia, W.V.) at 125, junior Joey Whitaker (Queensbury, N.Y.) at 133, sophomore Mike Roberts (Albany, N.Y.) at 149, sophomore Mike Cubillos (Schenectady, N.Y.) at 157 (by forfeit), freshman Andrew Detwiler (Souderton, Pa.) at 174, and sophomore Jim Connors (Mansfield, Mass.) at 197.
Winners for Springfield College included senior Mike Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J.) at 141, junior Jacob Tyler (Gouverneur, N.Y.) at 165, junior Elliot Smith (Richville, N.Y.) at 184 (ranked #1 in New England Division III at 184), and grad student Phil McGeough (Clifton Park, N.Y.) at heavyweight.
Through five bouts tonight, BU built a 17-3 lead and never looked back.
Up next for SC are the NECCWA Championships at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17-18.
