No. 10 Wrestling Opens '04-'05 Season This Weekend
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 3, 2004 -- The Springfield College wrestling team, ranked 10th in Division III, opens the 2004-05 season this Friday-Saturday, Nov. 5-6 at the Ithaca (NY) Invitational.With a veteran lineup that includes one All-American, two national qualifiers and six conference place-winners, the Pride looks poised to grab its eighth New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) title in the last nine years, and return to the top-10 at the NCAA Division III Championships.
“With 10 seniors, and strong junior and sophomore classes returning, I see no holes in our lineup,” says head coach Daryl Arroyo. “There are going to be some tough battles for the top spot at a lot of weight classes throughout the year.”
Sophomore Mike Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J.) returns after an outstanding freshman campaign that ended with an All-American fifth-place finish at 141 pounds at the NCAA Division III Championships last winter. Senior Brian Viglione (Chelmsford, Mass.), a 174-pounder, looks to make a return trip to the NCAA Championships after a solid junior campaign. Senior Scott Fay (Danbury, Conn.) was one of the top-ranked heavyweights in Division III last season before being sidelined by injury in February.
Junior Pete Marques (Massapequa, N.Y.), an all-conference pick at 133 pounds, is back after finishing second at the NECCWA Championships, while senior Tim O’Donnell (Hudson, N.H.) looks to add to his pair of all-NECCWA awards in the 165-pound division. Senior P.J. Rovinelli (Framingham, Mass.), who finished fifth at the ‘03 NECCWA Championships two seasons ago at 197 pounds, returns to the mat after a semester abroad.
Sophomore Adam Provost (Ludlow, Mass.) will vie for time at 125 pounds. Top newcomers also include freshmen Jacob Tyler (Gouverneur, N.Y.) and Jason Noonan (Mansfield, Mass.) at 157; Scott Heinze (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Greg Dussol (Amston, Conn.) at 165; Elliot Smith (Richville, N.Y.) at 184; Chris DeBlock (Sparta, N.J.) at 141, and sophomore James Sgaglione (Massapequa, N.Y.) at 133.
Breakdown By Weight Class
125 – Junior Derek McNerney and sophomore Ryan Hannigan are the top-two returnees here. Challengers include senior Mike Fregosi and freshman Jesse Hurlburt.
133 – Junior Pete Marques, who finished second at last winter’s NECCWA Championships, is the top returnee, followed by senior Tom Alimberti and sophomore Jaime Sgaglione. Sophomore Adam Provost and freshman Steve Schiavo provide solid depth.
141 – All-American and NECCWA champion Mike Gaeta is back for his sophomore season. Sophomore Ryan Briggs and newcomer Tom Clark look to contribute.
149 – Senior Brian Hayes and sophomore Mark DeCiccio are the top-two returnees, followed by senior Ben Davis-Oscar and junior Adam Uffleman. Freshman Chris DeBlock also figures in the mix.
157 – Senior Jerard Melito will battle sophomores Ryan Pope, Erik Delehanty and Rakan Ghubej, and freshmen Cy Kennedy, Greg Dussol and Jacob Tyler.
165 – Senior Tim O’Donnell, a two-time NECCWA place-winner, will compete with juniors Bill Koch, Scott Faivre and Andy Smith. Freshmen Jason Noonan and Scott Heinze also look for time.
174 – National qualifier Brian Viglione vies for another trip to the NCAA Championships. Expect junior Dan Blais, sophomore Andre Lee and freshman Rob Dombroskas to be factors.
184 – Senior P.J. Rovinelli, a NECCWA place-winner, returns after studying in Australia last season. Senior Andy Henault, junior Ryan Horton and freshman Elliot Smith will challenge.
197 – Junior Jason Leckey faces competition from freshman Robert Venditto. 285 – Senior Scott Fay, ranked in the top-five nationally in ’04 until an injury ended his season, is the top returnee here. Senior Noah Clock will also see plenty of mat time.

Head Coach Daryl Arroyo
Former Springfield College All-American Daryl Arroyo will be entering his 20th season as the head wrestling coach at his alma mater in 2009-10. Under his tutelage, the Springfield College wrestling program has posted a 278-151-6 overall dual-meet record, good for an outstanding .646 winning percentage.
