

WORCESTER, Mass. -- (September 18, 2007) -- Melissa Weinstein (Allentown, Pa.) recorded a win at No. 1 singles and teamed up with Amy Shaw (Walpole, Mass.) to win No. 1 doubles as the Springfield College women’s tennis team defeated Clark, 7-2, in NEWMAC action on Tuesday night.
The Pride pick up its first victory of the season and are now 1-2 while Clark falls to 0-4.
Springfield swept the doubles competition with Weinstein and Shaw leading the way at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-2. Shannon Desroches (Belchertown, Mass.) and Jess Sousa (Falmouth, Mass.) teamed up to win No. 2 doubles, 8-6, and Rachel Kushma (London, England) and Sara Russo (Amsterdam, N.Y.) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, as well.
Weinstein topped Mika Sneddon at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Shaw dropped the No. 2 singles to Freddie Palmer, 4-6, 6-3, 8-10, and Kushma fell to Kristen Domurad at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3.
The Pride swept No. 4, 5, and 6 singles to close out the match. Sousa topped Ashley Faden, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 before Desroches prevailed at No. 5 past Andrea Nathan, 6-2, 6-4. Finally, at No. 6 singles, Russo defeated Emily Schweitzer, 6-3, 6-2.
Springfield returns to action when it participates in the ITA’s this weekend at M.I.T.
