Leah Hettrick Named NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Player of the Week

Johnson & Wales Invitational Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., September 11, 2006 - Springfield College senior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) has been named this week’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week, in a report released on Monday morning, September 11th.

This past weekend, Hettrick, a graduate of Francis T. Maloney High School in Meriden, Conn., led the 7-1 Pride to a second-place team finish overall at the Johnson & Wales Invitational. SC went 3-1 on the weekend with wins over Suffolk University (3-0), Bridgewater State College (3-0), and UMass Dartmouth (3-1).

A senior tri-captain, Hettrick was the lone member of the Pride to be named to the All-Tournament Team this weekend, as the libero totaled an impressive 85 digs in four matches, good for a 6.54 dig-per-game average. Hettrick’s best match of the weekend came in the 3-1 victory over UMass Dartmouth when she compiled a team-best 26 digs in the four-game win.

Being named to the All-Tournament Team was not all that Hettrick accomplished this weekend, however, as she also became the women’s volleyball all-time career digs leader at Springfield College, passing former Pride great, Robin Chase ’00. Hettrick entered the weekend with 1,853 career digs, and finished the two-day tournament with a now up-to-date career total of 1,938 digs, passing Chase for first all-time. Chase accumulated a career total of 1,890 digs from the years of 1997-2000.

In the early going this season, the Pride as a team is second in the NEWMAC in digs, averaging 20.48 per game with a total of 512 in eight matches. Individually, Hettrick is currently third in the conference in digs with an average of 5.52 per game, but she does have the highest amount of digs out of any player in the conference (138).

SC will next take its 7-1 overall record and open up its 2006 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season on Tuesday night, September 12th, in a 7:00 p.m. start at Wellesley College.
