Jillian Urtz Named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year
Wellesley, Mass., November 9, 2005 - Springfield College freshman defender Jillian Urtz (Verona, N.Y.) has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Rookie of the Year, as announced at this afternoon’s annual postseason conference coaches meeting.
Seniors Meghan Bascetta (Granby, Conn.), Sarah Brooker (Auburn, Maine) and Jaclyn Galligan (Hopedale, Mass.) all received First-Team All-Conference honors, while sophomore Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) received Second-Team All-Conference honors.
Brooker, a tri-captain, is ranked in the top 10 in four different statistical categories in the NEWMAC, including fourth in goals (15) and points (33), fifth in goals per game (0.68), and seventh in points per game (1.50). She also garnered NEWMAC Player of the Week honors for two consecutive weeks this season (Sep. 25-Oct. 2).
Bascetta, also a tri-captain, is tied for eighth in the NEWMAC in goals scored with 10. Galligan has recorded six goals and two assists for a total of 14 points this season. Veazie, the NEWMAC Player of the Week back on September 12, has scored nine goals to go along with four assists for 22 points in as many games this season.
Urtz, one of just three freshmen on the Pride, has played and started in all 22 games for the Pride. Urtz has made an immediate impact for the No. 9 Pride on the defensive end, as SC has given up just 22 goals this season in 22 games. SC has outscored its opponents 63-22 this season.
SC (20-2), winners of 10-straight and 18 of its last 19, begins NCAA Division III Tournament action as it will play the winner of Middlebury/Manhattanville this Saturday, November 12, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowdoin College.
