Women's Volleyball Notches Win #20 for 16th Straight Season at VB Hall of Fame Invitational

Northampton, Mass. -- October 19, 2007 -- The Springfield College women's volleyball team split matches Friday night at Holyoke Community College in Day 1 of the Volleyball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament. The Pride defeated Gordon, 3-0, in the first match of the evening. Game scores were 30-17, 30-27, 30-28. In the second match, it was Williams defeating Springfield, 3-1. Game scores were 30-32, 30-25, 30-26, 30-23.

The night's first match was significant in that it upped Springfield's overall record to 20-6 at the time. It marked the 16th straight season that Springfield College women's volleyball and Head Coach Joel Dearing had achieved 20 wins. In that match, junior outside hitter Aylene Ilkson (Baldwin, N.Y.) recorded 16 kills and 21 digs.

In the second match, the Pride began strong by winning game #1 over Williams, 32-30. But the Ephs strung together three winning games in a row to produce the overall victory. Ilkson had 25 kills and 28 digs for the Pride. With the loss, Springfield is now 20-7 entering Saturday's matches at Smith College. The Pride will play Amherst at 10 am, and will play either Bowdoin or Wellesley at 2 pm in what is referred to as the Gold Bracket games.

Head Coach Joel Dearing

Joel Dearing Joel Dearing will enter his 21st season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2009. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 670-298 (.692) overall mark in 28 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach. Read more.
