NEW LONDON, Conn., April 4, 2004 -- Springfield College reached the semifinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Tennis Championships with a 4-0 win over Clark before dropping a 4-0 decision to MIT on Saturday.
MIT went on to win its sixth-straight conference crown with a 4-0 win over Babson.
The Pride (5-7) was impressive in advancing to the semifinals, posting four-consecutive straight-set triumphs. Senior Yuta Yoshi (Yokosuka, Japan) won 6-1, 6-1 at #1, followed by junior Rich Aseltine (Tyngsboro, Mass.), a 6-3, 6-0 winner at #2; senior Chris Sweeney (Wakefield, Mass.), who rolled 6-1, 6-1 at #3, and junior Tim Losee (Berlin, N.H.), who picked up a 6-4, 6-0 victory at #4.
In the other conference championship matches, Babson blanked Coast Guard, 4-0, then held off Wheaton, 4-3, in the semifinals. Also in the first round, Wheaton beat WPI, 4-0.
