Men's Track & Field Second At Coast Guard Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn., Jan. 22, 2005 – Springfield College senior All-American Matt Acciaioli (Warwick, R.I.) won the shot put (52 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and placed fourth in the weight throw (48-1 1/4) leading the Pride to second place at the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday.

Coast Guard won the meet with 181 points, followed by SC (124). Eastern Connecticut (74), Worcester State (61) Kings Point (59) and Conn. College (53).

Also winning an individual event for the Pride was freshman Nick DeCelle (Mechanicville, N.Y), who took top honors in the triple jump (43-1).

Other placewinners for the Pride included junior Blake Gulino (Old Saybrook, Conn.), who took second in the long jump (20-8 1/2), and junior Billy King (Wilmington, Mass.) who sprinted to second place in the 200 meters (23.42) and third in the 400 meters (51.58). Senior All-American Justin Welch (Woburn, Mass.) was runner-up in the high jump (6-1 1/2) while senior Pat DeRocco (Utica, N.Y.) ran to a second-place showing in the 1,000 meters (2:37.53)

Springfield College travels to Bowdoin on Saturday, January 29 to take on the host Polar Bears, MIT and Tufts.
