Veazie's Goal Lifts #17 Field Hockey to 3-2 OT Win Over #14 Williams

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 26, 2007) – In a battle of highly-ranked teams, the Springfield College field hockey team defeated Williams College, 3-2 in overtime, this evening in a non-conference game played at the Pride’s Stagg Field (formerly known as Benedum Field).
With the win, Springfield, ranked #17 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll, is now 7-2 on the season. Williams, ranked #14, is now 5-2 overall, suffering its second straight loss after opening with five consecutive victories.
Williams never trailed in this contest until the overtime goal was scored. Junior Meighan McGowan (Greenwich, Conn.) tallied first for the Ephs just 6:16 into the game. Senior midfielder Cary Bearn (Bethlehem, Pa.) then made it 2-0 at the 28:01 mark. Her goal was assisted by junior defender Jess Overlander (New Canaan, Conn.).
But just 1:39 later (at the 29:40 mark), senior midfielder Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Me.) scored an important goal to give the home team some momentum heading into the half.
In the second half, junior midfielder Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) tied matters at 2-all at 42:01 into the game. The goal was assisted by Veazie. It was at 2-all that the game stayed. Both teams had opportunities to win it in regulation.
But just 3:09 into the first overtime, following a mad scramble in front of the Williams net, Veazie poured in the winning goal, unassisted.
For Springfield, senior goalkeeper Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) was credited with 16 saves, including one of the spectacular variety in overtime. She went the distance. For Williams, sophomore goalkeeper Bethany Baker (Westfield, N.J.) played the first 35 minutes and had two saves. Then sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Jones (Prairie Village, Kansas) recorded five saves in the second half and overtime (38 minutes worth of action).
Williams outshot Springfield, 18-10.
Up next, Springfield will host Clark University on Saturday (Sept. 29) at 1:00 pm. Williams will be at Trinity on the same day at 12 noon.
